  5. AFC's mention of my Ciceronian predilection has led to this advise to the Motion Picture Academy and all of its members (including Lindsey, Paris, Sean, et al ) from Cicero's On The Good Life (44 BC):

Moral goodness has been held to fall into three subdivisions; the first is the ability to distinguish the truth from falsity, and to understand the relationships between one phenomenon and another and the causes and consequences of each one.
The second category is the ability to restrain the passions (pathe in Greek) and to make the appetites (hormai) amenable to reason.
The third is the capacity to behave considerately and understandingly in our associations with other people.
    See On Duties (II)

Cicero is one of the preeminent Roman statesmen, orators, rhetoricians and Stoic philosophers having adopted stoicism from its Greek roots, primarily through Zeno and others.

  12. Many thanks to those who participated in our little prize-less Oscar competition. There were upsets, and there were predictable winners; I hope you came out a lot better than I did...

Here is the list of pertinent winners:

    1. Best Picture: The Hurt Locker
    2. Actor: Jeff Bridges
    3. Actress: Sandra Bullock
    4. Supp. Actor: Christopher Waltz
    5. Supp. Actress: Mo'Nique
    6. Directing: Kathryn Bigelow
    7. Foreign: El Secreto de Sus Ojos
    8. Adapted Screenplay: Precious
    9. Original Screenplay: The Hurt Locker
    10. Animated Feature: Up
    11. Art Direction: Avatar
    12. Cinematography: Avatar
    ...
    15. Score: Up
    16. Song: The Weary Kind - Crazy Heart
    17. Costume: Young Victoria
    18. Documentary Feature: The Cove

Just to keep this interactive, go ahead and add up your score. Your total should be out of 16 possible correct picks. If you think you are the winner, make a comment touting your supremacy (and then I'll double check just to make sure you're a justified braggert! ).

This was fun. Thanks for being a part of it!

  13. Well, I think because he doesn't want to boast, Killa B (a.k.a. Brian) has yet to claim his rightful place high above the rest of us Oscar guessers.

In the end, it took 10 picks out of 16 to earn the top spot, and that was Killa B's score. There were a couple folks close with 9 correct, so Brian wins for this year.

    Congratulations and thanks for playing!

  14. Amicus provides sincerest regrets for being unable to register his picks. Actually the thrill was gone when the Academy failed to nominate "Skank City", an indy featuring C.Sheen, for best picture.
Is it true that the "red carpet" will henceforth be referred to as the mammary promenade?
